Mark Carney wants Canadians to become more “literate” on AI. But is a lack of understanding really why people are against it?

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke with Hadrian Mertins-Kirkwood to dig into the Canadian government’s AI strategy and its many blind spots.

@parismarx listening to the episode now, and while I'm in broad agreement so far, but I'm disappointed in the "'AI' might be useful for coding" framing that journalists keep bringing up.

It isn't. It can generate code shaped objects, but it is a net negative to the practice of software development as a whole, and risks throwing away so many of the practices that help us maintain robust projects over the last 4 decades.

This kind of statement is also fixated on just the output, and not everything else that goes into the process of coding — which is no different from other industries, and I don't understand how we can see the criticisms there but not with software. As weird as it might sound code is written for other humans to be able to read, not for computers, and fixating on the outputs makes for brittle projects that are hard to debug and maintain.

@parismarx
It's the proponents of AI who are illiterate about its costs and risks, or financially inclined to act that way.
