Amazon launched a generative AI recap video system, to help viewers catch up with TV shows.

It launched with Fallout, its own TV show.

…however, Amazon have had to delete the video after viewers pointed out it got almost every detail wrong. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3r77j5nze5o

The errors included getting dialogue wrong and incorrectly claiming a scene was set 100 years earlier than it was.

@GossiTheDog It's a shame it wasn't possible to create video recaps for TV shows before generative AI

@GossiTheDog I don't even want to know how much electricity (fossil fuels) and drinking water were wasted just for that. 🙄

It is just such a weird concept to me, that GenAI can really achieve so much, but just makes shit up.

Think about the achievement:
- we can literally just “Star Trek ask” for stuff and it tells us. About anything.
- it can parse, learn and retain huge interconnected data sets
- it can run complex task, managing inputs and outputs

That this can happen from saying something in plain language is amazing.

The fact that it fails at the basic fundamentals of “don’t make up stuff that isn’t in a dataset” is truly wild. No matter how many guardrails you put in place it’s like “NOOPE”

At the risk of being repetitive: Current “AI” is not AI. It is a hugely efficient and impressive system for retrieving and recombining correlated information from a humongous body of learned and massively cross-referenced data. But it’s not even close to being cognition or intelligence. The real danger is not that it will become super-intelligence — it won’t and can’t — but that its venal and mendacious vendors will continue to tout it as such, and that it will as a result be entrusted with tasks that even genuine cognition and intelligence cannot undertake safely without massive checks and balances from other responsible intelligences.

There was never anything wrong with regular recap edits, except having to pay someone to do them.

@GossiTheDog AI simply had different playthru...

But really... this could be weekend job for intern with access to basic editing software.
It might be slower, but way cheaper and without this bad PR.

AGI will not kill us as super intelligence, but by hyper incompetence.

It will do all the fuckery people already do except on steroids and at global scale.

The reason why it will be deadly is because the f*kers with all the wealth forced on us.

It’s a global level, miss allocation of resources that blow a hole in almost everyone’s lives.

These assholes cannot get away without retribution

@GossiTheDog “The firm said in November it was testing the "first-of-its-kind" tool”

Prior systems for recaps provided accurate summaries. The innovation that had never been done before was to get it all wrong.

Naw. They didn't get it wrong. They were attempting to be spoiler free!

Amazon also launched Ask the Book so you can have the Kindle book tell you what happened, what you missed, and what you need so you can turn in that book report you forgot about. Search for that...

Reminds me of that time Kevin when the right started destroying the education system because too many people were getting educated and starting to be critical of a system that simply used them.
Now it's about degrading the internet to serve only the very wealthy because they can't allow the "peasants" to have easy access to too much reliable information.

@GossiTheDog IMDb was a crowdsourced volunteer effort before Amazon bought an monetized it. Looks like they're creating the same kind of community to correct Amazon's own mistakes.

@GossiTheDog how it started: give LLM bullet points to write an email, recipient feeds email to LLM to get bullet point summary.

How it's going: give LLM bullet points to generate a TV show, viewer feeds show to LLM to get bullet point summary.

@GossiTheDog this painfully highlights once again that no one is awake at the wheel, or maybe “sober” is a better word, in these very large organizations. Drunk on ai slop juice, forgetting what did and didn’t happen in their very own content!
